The Call (from Soho)
I made a goal to win an exhibition in New York, without the aid of a studio. I had worked towards that goal for over 15 years, using the factory and fast-food restaurants as my studio. Having gotten my high intensity "rip" drawings into regional juried shows, I went to Soho in early 2003, hitting the pavement with drawings in hand. Before I left, I slipped a slide submission under the door of a gallery sponsoring a national juried competition. I always anticipated that the first of May would be my lucky day - my factory drawings even attest to that. On May 1, while drawing at McDonald's, my cell phone rang. I was informed that I had placed in that competition and was awarded an exhibition in Soho. It made my day that the juror was from the Museum of Modern Art. That she was from the department of paintings and sculpture was of no disadvantage to me - my drawings are visualized paintings.
