School of Hard Knocks at the Door Plant
In the early 1980's, I worked as a display artist for a record company. I quit in 1986 and after losing my studio, I joined a local door plant. Unable to afford a new studio and my urge to draw too strong to be snuffed out, I made a bold step of personalizing my work space - I mounted a drawing board next to my machine on the line. In between assembling doors on the line I would develope my drawing style from standing position.
My early series of drawings expressed my frustration with performing repetitive tasks amidst loud noise, low pay, and broken dreams. As this part of my journey shows, I felt boxed in and stuck.
